Working with Images in Writer
Everything you need for CBSE Class 10 IT Board Exams: Inserting & Modifying Images, Embedding vs Linking, 11 Graphic Filters, Crop vs Resize, 4 Anchoring Modes, 6 Text Wrap Alignments, and Drawing Object Grouping.
1. Inserting and Managing Images
Images enhance technical documentation, illustrated reports, and publications. LibreOffice Writer provides multiple methods to insert graphics:
4 Ways to Insert Images:
- Insert Image Dialog: Menu Insert > Image.
- Drag and Drop: Drag file directly from file manager into Writer window.
- Clipboard: Copy from an image editor or web page and press Ctrl + V.
- Built-in Gallery: Open sidebar Gallery deck (View > Gallery) and drag clip art.
Embedding vs Linking (Exam Crucial):
Embedding (Default): Copies image data inside the .odt file. Document is self-contained but larger.
Linking: Checking 'Link' saves only the file path. Keeps document light, but moving the image breaks the display.
Break Link: Edit > Links to External Files > Break Link converts a linked image into embedded.
2. Graphic Filters Toolbar (Table 2.2)
When an image is selected, the Graphic Filter icon on the Picture toolbar provides 11 artistic and corrective filters:
| Filter Name | Function & Visual Effect |
|---|---|
| Invert | Inverts the color values of a color image or brightness values of a grayscale image. |
| Smooth | Softens the contrast of an image, reducing harsh noise. |
| Sharpen | Increases the contrast between adjacent pixels, highlighting edges. |
| Remove Noise | Removes single stray speckles/pixels from scanned pictures. |
| Solarization | Mimics excess photographic darkroom light exposure with partial color inversion. |
| Aging | Applies an antique brownish/sepia tone simulating an old vintage photograph. |
| Posterize | Reduces the total number of colors to produce a poster/pop-art print appearance. |
| Pop Art | Converts colors into dramatic, high-saturation Warhol-style pop-art tones. |
| Charcoal Sketch | Displays the image as a black-and-white charcoal hand drawing. |
| Relief | Creates a 3D embossed look simulating light cast over raised contours. |
| Mosaic | Groups small pixel clusters into mosaic tiles. |
3. Cropping vs Resizing Images
Cuts off unwanted outer margins while leaving the central region intact.
Keep Scale: Cropping does not alter image magnification. Image dimensions shrink.
Keep Image Size: Image keeps same boundary size, zooming into the remaining area.
Modifies the width and height of the entire picture:
Corner Handles: Dragging corner handles changes size proportionally.
Shift Key: Hold Shift while dragging side handles to maintain aspect ratio.
4. Anchoring and Text Wrapping
- To Page: Image stays at exact coordinate on page regardless of text edits.
- To Paragraph: Image moves vertically with associated paragraph text.
- To Character: Image is anchored to a specific character.
- As Character: Image behaves like an inline text letter in the sentence.
- Wrap Off (None): Places image on its own blank line without text.
- Page Wrap: Text flows on both left and right sides of image.
- Optimal Page Wrap: Suppresses text wrap on narrow side (< 2 cm).
- Wrap Left (Before): Text flows only on the left side of image.
- Wrap Right (After): Text flows only on the right side of image.
- Wrap Through: Image floats directly over or behind text.
