    Quick Answer / AEO Definition

A Style in LibreOffice Writer is a named collection of formatting attributes (such as font face, size, margins, line spacing, and borders) saved together so they can be consistently applied across pages, headings, and paragraphs with a single click.

1.1 Manual Formatting vs. Using Styles

    Manual Formatting

    • Applied via formatting toolbars on highlighted text pieces.
    • Must be repeated manually across every single heading or paragraph.
    • Modifying document theme requires re-selecting and updating each instance manually.
    • Prone to formatting inconsistencies across large multi-page reports.

    Using Styles

    • Stores all formatting parameters under a single semantic name.
    • Ensures uniform document appearance across 100+ pages instantly.
    • Updating the parent style automatically cascades changes to all linked elements.
    • Shifts author focus from cosmetic appearances to core document structure.

1.2 The 6 Style Categories in LibreOffice Writer

Writer provides 6 distinct categories of styles, accessible from the top toolbar of the Styles and Formatting deck (F11):

    Page Styles

    Layout

Defines overall page specifications: paper size (A4, Letter), margins (top, bottom, left, right), header/footer placement, page borders, and orientation (Portrait/Landscape).

    Paragraph Styles

    Structure

Controls block text formatting: line spacing (single, 1.5), text alignment (Left, Center, Justify), indents, tab stops, drop caps, and borders. Includes heading hierarchies.

    Character Styles

    Inline

Formats specific words or character spans within a paragraph without altering block flow: font family, font color, bold/italics, subscript/superscript, and highlight backgrounds.

    Frame Styles

    Containers

Formats rectangular container boxes holding text, graphics, and formulas: coordinates, boundary borders, margins, background shading, and text wrap properties.

    List Styles

    Bullets & Numbers

Applies bullet points, numeric styles, roman numerals, or multi-level outline numbering to sequential lists.

    Table Styles

    Tabular

Formats tabular data grids: outer/inner borders, header row shading, alternating row patterns, and cell text alignment.

1.3 Applying, Creating & Updating Custom Styles

    1Fill Format Mode

Designed for rapid application of a selected style to scattered elements across multiple pages. Click the Fill Format icon (paint bucket) in the Styles deck, then simply click anywhere on target text. Press Esc to quit.

    2Creating from Selection

Format a paragraph with desired font, spacing, and colors. Click the Styles Action button on the top-right of the Styles deck → choose New Style from Selection → enter your custom name (e.g. MyReportHeading) → click OK.

    3Drag-and-Drop Method

Highlight formatted text on your document page and drag the selection directly into the Styles deck list. A dialog prompts for a new style name. Note: Drag-and-drop cannot be used to create Page Styles.

4Loading Styles from Template / File

Click Styles Action button → Load Styles. Select the template category or click From File to browse any .odt or .ott file on your computer. Enable Overwrite to replace duplicate style names.
